Chiefs Beat Ice Pigs in Broomball

The Ice Pigs were handed their first loss of the season last Sunday in Massena Men's Broomball and it was to their rival, Akwesasne's The Chiefs. Final score was 6-1.

Both teams were undefeated until Sunday and the game started out flying with end-to-end runs and solid goaltending as well as solid passing plays. The Chiefs Ryan Prairie opened the scoring as he took a pass from Derek Hopps and the ball bounced around in the crease before he swatted it in. A minute later Hakta Garrow made it 2-0 as he fired in the open net. Prairie and Hopps connected on the Chiefs third goal as they had a well executed back and forth passing display and the first period ended 3-0.

In the second period – the first period is 25 minutes and the second is 15 minutes – Prairie scored their fourth goal as he took a backhanded blast, which hit the top corner. Duck Jacobs finally got the Ice Pigs on the board when he grabbed a loose ball in the crease and scored near the half-way point.

The Chiefs then added two late goals including a Jake Lazore slapshot to seal the win and hand the Ice Pigs their first loss of the year. After a ten minute warm up the Ice Pigs hit the ice again for a match up against Open Net/Ole Smokehouse and they moved on from that Chiefs loss to blank Open Net 8-0. They flew out to a big 6-0 first period lead on goals by Blake Diabo (3), Jacobs, Garrett Cree and Dewey Thompson.

In the final period Dwight Bero scored both goals late and the Ice Pigs cruised to the win.
