Seaway Valley Venom Searching for New Coach

MASSENA -- The Seaway Valley Venom semi-pro football franchise seek a head coach, according to team President Elijah Winfrey.

The Venom’s owner is Joe McDonald of Akwesasne.

“Over the past month-and-a-half, we have interviewed several candidates for the position,” Winfrey said. “Now we are opening up our search wider so that we can make sure we find the best candidate possible.”

The job will pay $1,000, with half paid at the start the season and the rest at the end.

“On top of that, we will also do a couple of fundraisers … where our head coach will receive a portion of the proceeds,” Winfrey said. “We know that the money we are offering is not a lot but it is all we have to give. In the past teams in our area have only looked for volunteer coaches and unfortunately that has never really worked out for various reasons.”

He says the head coach will only be asked to handle responsibilities associated with the position and will not be expected to accept extra detail.

“So many times in semi-pro football, the head coach ends up taking on other responsibilities and ultimately it hurts the on field product,” he said. “Our next head coach will only have to worry about developing our players and keeping us competitive on the football field.”

The new team leader will be tasked with deciding practice dates and routines, as well as the team roster.

Whoever accepts the job will have to sign a one-year contract. Previous head coaching experience is preferred. Experience at any position on coaching staff is required.

Anyone interested in applying can contact Joe McDonald, the team’s owner, at (518)319-7312.
