A Voice from the Eastern Door
There are two words to describe the Salmon River 2015 Girls Varsity Volleyball team: determination and solidarity. The Salmon River volleyball squad earned its fifth straight Section 10 Title by sweeping past Potsdam on Tuesday, Noveember 3.
The Lady Shamrocks went on to the Overall Section 10 semi finals and turned back rivals Chateaugay, who had beaten the Shamrocks twice in the regular season, 3-1. The Shamrocks were ahead 2-1 going into the fourth game after three see-saw sets. The game was tied 8-8 when the Lady Shamrocks went to work and wrapped up the game with a 25-11 decision over the Lady Bulldogs.
Raven Oakes was strong at the service line with 22 points, including three aces and 19 assists. Tristan Cook-Hasty added 17 points and four blocks while Mara Lazore tallied 15 points, 24 attacks, five blocks and four kills. Brittany Brooks worked the net for 14 kills and Taylin David contributed 11 attacks and one kill.
Salmon River and Massena advanced on to the Overall Final where both teams played hard. After the loss of the first two games (24-26, 21-25), the Lady Shamrocks rallied to take the third set, 25-21. The Lady Raiders shook it off to take the fourth game 25-17 and claim their second straight overall title.
Raven Oakes led the Shamrocks with 25 service points, 39 assists and two kills. Brittany Brooks was a force at the net with 24 kills, 15 points and two aces. Mara Lazore added 13 points, six blocks and four kills while Tristan Cook-Hasty tallied 15 points and four kills. Taylin David contributed three kills, Fawn Jacobs generated 11 points and Tsiiowisonte Laffin finished with three.
The Lady Raiders were led by Sabrina Sunday with 10 points and eight kills while Nina Rourke (5 kills), Jacalyn Lamica (5 kills) and Cashlyn Jaggers, Tianna Back (28 digs), Tatum Lafrance ( 19 points and 33 assits) and Alyssa Eubank (7 kills) contributed to the win and an 18-0 undefeated season.
Following the semi-final match, the All-NAC Awards were announced. The Patti Baldwin Memorial Award went to Brittany Brooks from Salmon River. This award goes to the outstanding girls volleyball player in Section 10 and chosen by the referees. The other finalists were Cashlynn Jaggers from Massena and Mary Wainwright from Gouverneur. Sabrina Sunday from Massena and Kimberly Reville of Chateuagay were named East Division co-MVP's. Massena was awarded the Stephanie Putney Team Sportsmanship Award.
On Saturday the Lady Shamrocks traveled to SUNY Canton for the Regional Finals against Broadalbin-Perth. The Patriots took all three sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-12.
"The girls played hard and never gave up!" commented Coach Nicole Deshaies. "I'm a proud coach today."
Mara Lazore paced the Shamrocks with six points and two kills. Fawn Jacobs added six service points while Tsiiowisonte Laffin generated three service points. Taylin David tallied two service points and two kills and Brittany Brooks notched five kills.
The Lady Shamrocks end the season with a 14-5 record.
