A Voice from the Eastern Door
The first ever World Indigenous Games were held in Brazil and commenced on Sunday, November 1, 2015. Proudly bringing home the gold was the Canadian Soccer team who consisted of players from Akwesasne, Kahnawake, Kanesatake and Kwakwaka'wakw nation in British Columbia. Brazil has been home to Indigenous Games before, but this is the first time they opened their games to Indigenous peoples from around the world. Hosting over 200 athletes from around the world to compete in western style games as well as Indigenous traditional games.
Players earned a spot on Team Canada after being scouted at a series of tournaments held last year, each player then had to compete in the final tryouts held this past summer.
