MINNIE MONICA LEAF "Kiahkons"

AKWESASNE – Minnie Monica "Kiahkons" Leaf, 66, of 1057 Island Road East, Cornwall Island, passed away Wednesday night, October 21, 2015, at the Cornwall Community Hospital, after a lengthy battle with many health issues.

Minnie was born November 27, 1948, in Cornwall, Ontario, daughter of the late Louis and Mary Phillips Buckshot. She attended Cornwall Island schools, Cornwall High School, St. Lawrence College, and earned her Bachelors of Education from McGill University. She married George "Porky" Leaf on July 5, 1969 at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Jacobs officiating. Porky predeceased her on September 9, 1997.

She was a Mohawk language teacher in all three districts of the AMBE School Board. She proudly retired from the Skawatsira Program in 2008.

Minnie was a member of the St. Regis Catholic Church and the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group. She was an avid Ottawa Senators and New York Jets fan. She loved to go the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Bingo Palace. She enjoyed Radio Bingo and spending time on her "Procrastination Porch" with her grandchildren and many friends. Her door was always open for those that needed her.

She is survived by her children, Lorna and Mathew Herne, Melane "Bird" Leaf, LoriAnn Leaf and Edward Porter, Bronson Leaf and Colleen Lazore, Eastwood "YoYo" Leaf, and Rena Leaf, all of Cornwall Island; her chosen children, Donna Jocko, Kelly Buckshot, Taylor Bova, and Frank Thompson, Jr .; her grandchildren, Leo, Karson, Kamron, Kahronion, Braxstyn, Katie, and Bronson Jr .; her chosen grandchildren, Brandi, KJ, Ranerahtenhtha, Karonhiahkwas, Kinley, Kane, Tahoieritonhakie, Tehoronhiataseani and many more.

Minnie is also survived by her brothers, Paul Buckshot and Mitchell and Liz Sunday; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Buckshot, Lorraine Buckshot, Lucy Ann and Robert Thompson, Pauline and Frank Thompson, Marilyn and Thomas Francis, Sheila Leaf and Jennifer Deruchie, Pearl Leaf, and Joyce Laffin and Jeff Lauzon; her brothers-in-law, Patrick "Bucky" Leaf, Frank Leaf, Kenny Leaf, Brian and Missy Leaf, Peter Back, Sr., and Wilfred Bova.

Minnie was predeceased by two grandchildren in infancy, Baby Jorja and Baby Rocky; her brothers, Peter Louis Buckshot on September 5, 1986; Mitchell "Rocky" Buckshot on April 9, 2008; and Alexander Buckshot in infancy; her mother-in-law, Agnes Jocko Leaf and her fathers-in-law, Frank Leaf and Bobby Laffin; and her sisters-in-law, Josephine Back and Mary Bova; her brothers-in-law, Francis and Franklin Leaf; and her chosen sister, Linda Hopps.

Friends called at her home from Saturday until Monday. Funeral Services were held Monday at her home with Rev. Jack Downs officiating.
