A Voice from the Eastern Door

Fire Prevention Week

The annual event was held last week at the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Station #1.

As with many, many years past "Chief" Dick Laffin put on his presentation to the kids. He has been doing this for a long time and enjoys doing it, according to the other fire fighters.

His presentation dealt mainly with smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors which should be maintained year round.

Fire Fighter Jory Tarbell suited up with the help of local students and as he donned the different pieces of the firefighters uniform, Laffin gave a running commentary on what each piece of equipment was for.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police department was on hand and Officer Leroy Swamp talked about Stranger Danger and what to do on the subject. He also touched on Amber Alert and its purpose and the common theme throughout the presentation was about upcoming Trick or Treat safety.

After the presentations the students went outside and were given a demonstration of the tanker truck which Tarbell operated and also showed the ladder truck and its operations.

The students were also given refreshments and a closer look at the life of the volunteer fire department.
