Pets and Halloween

By Jennifer Herne, LVT

Halloween is usually a fun time for all, but sometimes pets and Halloween don't always mix well. Here are some tips for your furry friend during this "spook"tacular time!

1) Candy, candy, candy...kids love to stash candy in their room but make sure you properly store all candy. A dog's keen sense of smell can help them find even the best hiding spots. Chocolate, sugar free and candy containing xylitol can cause problems with your pets.

2) Glow sticks are great for kids in the dark on Halloween night, but not so great for pets. Although they are labeled non-toxic, if your pet bites them the substance is very bitter and can cause drooling and racing around the house! A little treat of milk should counteract the bitter taste!

3) Make sure identification is on your pet and is visible. Use reflective collars and leashes and make sure you have an identification tag on your pet at all times. The crowds of costumed humans might be scary and cause your pet to bolt! Make sure a collar with identification is on your pet, this will help reunite him with you in the event he gets lost.

4) Even pets that are kept indoors might get stressed out with all the traffic at your home. If you are unsure how your pet will react to kids, it is best to keep them indoors in a crate away from all the commotion of trick or treating. Too many people in strangely dressed costumes can cause stress and anxiety for pets.

5) And lastly, if you put a costume on your pet do not leave them unattended, most pets dislike costumes and could chew the costume off. You don't want your pet ingesting the costume and getting very sick.

Have a safe Halloween!
