The Akwesasne Fastbreakers won the WB Goodnow Agency "B" Cup in the 2015 Droppin' the Gloves on Cancer fundraiser. The event raised money to help cancer patients at Massena Memorial and Canton-Potsdam hospitals. This year's event raised $7,000, bringing the gross revenues over the tourney's seven-year history to just over $62,000.
The Fastbreakers skated to a 4-0 win over the Green Mountain Thunder of Burlington, Vt. Scoring in the title game were Valen Timmons (from Sky Timmons and Jessica Legue), Amanda King (from Lakota Lazore), Valen Timmons (from Jessica Legue) and Larri Skidders (unassisted).
The team also included Kaitlyn McPherson, Mandy Francis, Kristal Vanlershort, Victoria Thompson, Julie LaVenture, Leah Delormier, Toni Garrow and Elisha King. Donaldson Funeral Home was the proud sponsor of the Akwesasne Fastbreaker's team who won their first game against Brasher Beavers 10 to 0, and then pulled in another high scoring game winning over Play Therapy 8 to 0. Their third game was more challenging but still shut out Green Mountain with a score of 4 to 0.
Play Therapy from Ottawa edged out the St. Lawrence Cougars for the Helena General Store "C" Cup with a 4-3 win in the final minutes of regulation.
The Brasher Beavers took Chicks with Sticks (Rochester) to overtime for their 4-3 win in the consolation game. We had a great weekend of hockey and fun.
The "Pink Seat" section was one of the largest the event has ever seen. It included 20 women that have lost the battle against cancer, 10 currently in treatment and another 21 survivors.
"We want to see the survivor category continue to grow," event coordinator Julia Rose said. "That is why every one of us participates in this tournament."
As for next year, we will hold a post tournament meeting to decide how to proceed with regards to date, format, etc. So I don't have an answer for you right now.
