AKWESASNE – Mr. Michael George, 70, of 346 St. Regis Road, peacefully passed away Wednesday evening, October 7, 2015 at his home with his family by his side.

Mike was born August 16, 1945 in Malone, the son of the late Mitchell Jr. and Margaret Delorimiere George, and graduated from Salmon River Central School in 1964. On September 16, 1964, he entered the US Army, where he did his basic training at Fort Dix. In 1965, he entered the Hawk Missile System Radar and Battery Control Central Maintenance School before being stationed at the Hawk Missile Site in Korea from 1966-1967, during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from active duty on September 15, 1967. He continued to serve his country in the US Army Reserves, stationed in Massena, for 21 more years until his retirement as a Platoon Sargent 1st Class. On May 3, 1969, he married Barbara Nerhoft in Cornwall. Mike attended Canton ATC for Drafting and Land Surveying.

Mike worked for a time for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, where he surveyed and drew the maps of the southern portion of the Akwesasne Territory. These maps are still used today with the original map being on display at the Smithsonian Institute. Mike also drew the structural steel plans for the St. Regis Mohawk Community Building and taught drafting classes at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. Most of Mike's working career was with the New York State Lottery as a Sales Rep, retiring after 31 years of service. Mike was a Numismatic or avid coin collector, and a life member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post 1479 in Akwesasne. He was an avid NY Mets Baseball and Syracuse Basketball fan and truly loved watching his grandchildren play sports.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Barb; his children, Hillary and Gus Pyke, Lesley and Moochie Bero, and Nick George and Lee Thomas, all of Akwesasne; his grandchildren, Kiera, Jasmine, Levi, Joseph, Dale, Michael, Mitchell, Edward, Nicholas Jr., and Carter; his sister, Diane and Eugene King of Akwesasne; his brother, Robert and Anna Delorimiere of Akwesasne; his sisters –in-law, Lucille George of Farmington, NY; and Charlene Carboni of Ingleside, Ontario; his brother-in-law, Stuart White of Akwesasne; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by his brother, Thomas George; his sisters, Marie White, Lorraine Sears, and Shirley George; and a nephew, Mark George.

Friends called at his home from Thursday until Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating.
