A Voice from the Eastern Door

Iroquois take Silver at WILC

The World Indoor Lacrosse Championship concluded their games in front of a mostly Haudenosaunee crowd with a large contingent of them having traveled from Akwesasne. From 2003, 2007, 2011 and now in 2015, the world's best lacrosse players gather to compete for the gold medal and every year the results are the same: Canada wins the gold, the Iroquois won the silver medal, and the United States take the bronze medal.

What set this year apart from the others is the setting - on our own home Haudenosaunee turf, no pun intended. From the grand Opening Ceremonies to the Closing Ceremonies, the WILC 2015 games was a world-class event; planned, staged and executed flawlessly. It was the equivalent of welcoming a guest into your home and serving them the finest in hospitality: food, entertainment, and friendliness not to mention having it all swathed in our culture, history and legends. Their greatest glory was an unprecedented host meal for over 3000 people on Saturday afternoon. All teams, fans, officials, organizers, vendors, and security were treated to a traditional meal cooked by Haudenosaunee women from across the Confederacy. The traditional meal included roasted bison, salads, hash, squash, along with some surprising dishes that simply amazed everyone by its intention of feeding everyone and feeding everyone well with food left over. Teams from 12 countries participated finishing: Canada -1st, Iroquois Nationals -2nd, USA – 3rd, Israel – 4th, England – 5th, Ireland – 6th, Czech Republic – 7th, Australia – 8th, Finland – 9th, Turkey – 10th, Germany – 12th, and Switzerland 13th place. Winning the silver medal is no small feat and this should not be taken lightly; at the same time, winning the silver medal four years in a row requires serious analysis as to how our game is played.
