A Voice from the Eastern Door

Koala Place Receives Donation from Boston Pizza Cornwall

Koala Place – Child and Youth Advocacy Centre would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dan Orr and Matt Cinnamon, owners of The Care Centre, for their generous contribution of $900 to Koala Place, in support of our fundraising bear campaign.

The 'hub' model has emerged as an effective centralized service delivery approach for small and rural communities, supporting the government's vision for providing seamless and coordinated services to those in need, whether it be in the victim services field, child abuse, justice, mental health, health, child protection, police services, etc.

The Care Centre has formed an Advisory Committee to discuss the implementation of a health hub. They are located at the former General Hospital at 510 Second Street East, Cornwall, Ontario. As discussions were held with community partners, the concept evolved to creating a social services hub. It has been decided that it would be beneficial to survey social service organizations in our area, in order to determine their needs and interest in exploring the possibility of building a community hub model. The model is not one-size-fits all, but is rather flexible in design, allowing for a high degree of innovation and creativity to address local needs. The Care Centre (located at the former Cornwall General Hospital) is creating a community hub for health services, medical service, social services, etc.

A highly confidential environment, Koala Place provides children, youth and the non-offending family members a safe and neutral setting to disclose their stories.  Partner organizations such as Police Services, Child Protection Services, Medical Services, Mental Health Professionals, Health Services, Prosecution and Victim Services, collaborate to provide expert, integrated and wrap-around services to victims and witnesses of physical abuse, sexual abuse or maltreatment.

Koala Place would not have come so far, so quickly, to address the critical issue of child abuse if not for the financial support from the Department of Justice Canada – Victims Fund, our partners, and community.
