Lady Raiders
The Massena Lady Raiders swim squad took first place in all but one event during their Friday, Sept. 11 contest with the Salmon River Shamrocks for a 62-32 final score.
Salmon River's lone top finish went to Caroline Russell in the 100-meter freestyle, tallying a 1:05.51.
For Massena, Sydney Lewis took first in the 200-meter freestyle with 2:32.08.
Sheyenne Hays won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:44.14.
Sydnee Carroll claimed the 50-meter freestyle, clocking 28.82 seconds.
Bailey Nevill was the top swimmer in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:23.43.
Hailey Webster championed the 500-meter freestyle in 7:21.29.
Hannah Laneuville bested the 100-meter backstroke, recording 1:19.49.
Abigail Elman took first in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:21.31.
By their powers combined, Laneuville, Hays, Elman and Laura Dowdy finished first in the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:18.39.
Nevill, Lewis, Carroll and Kimberly Kaye claimed 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:08.57. Dowdy, Lewis, Carroll and Elman won the 400-meter freestyle relay, clocking 4:39.10.
Lady Raiders Soccer
After leading 1-0 at halftime, the Massena Lady Raiders posted three quick goals in the second half to win 4-0 against the visiting Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils on Thursday, Sept. 10.
Abby LaClair booted in the only goal Massena would need with 5:30 on the clock in the first half, unassisted.
In the sixth minute of the second stanza, she took a pass from Maddie Mailhot for an insurance goal. After just over a minute, Devin Kelly took a pass from LaClair and scored. In the ninth minute, LaClair set up Kyrsten Stone for the last goal of the game.
Mikenna Merry worked the Massena crease for seven saves.
Lady Raiders Volleyball
The Massena Lady Raiders notched their second win for 2015, besting the Potsdam Sandstoners 3-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Massena took the first set 25-6, losing the second frame 25-21 but recovered to take sets three and four 25-9 and 25-15 respectively.
Tatum LaFrance led the Massena charge, serving 13 points with 17 assists. Aryanna Jacobs and Tianna Back each tallied 10 service points. Sabrina Sunday and Kyrsha Angus each chipped in six kills.
For Potsdam, Camryn Mangual notched two points and three kills.
Massena Coach Margaret Trombly says she thinks the team is in for a strong season.
"I feel good about the season, bunch of great girls with talent and heart for the game of volleyball," Trombly said, adding that they won the Section 10 and NAC Class A crowns last year.
She believes their "powerful serves and hustle" will take them a long way, but they need "more and louder communication" while on the court.
She believes their toughest competition will be against Chateaugay and Salmon River.
She says her key players are Tatum LaFrance, who she describes as a "setter and overall great player;" Sabrina Sunday, who she says excels with her hard serve; power hitter Kyrsha Angus; and Cashlynn Jaggers, who she says "makes smart plays and is a good server."
Their Akwesasne athletes include Angus, Tianna Back, Jacobs, LaFrance, Mckenzee Lazore, Nina Rourke, Jenna Tarbell and Sunday.
MCHS Boys Soccer
After falling to the Canton Golden Bears, the Massena Red Raiders soccer squadron rallied to take the Bill O'Neill Memorial Tournament over Salmon River, Parishville-Hopkinton and Hermon-DeKalb.
In the O'Neill tourney, Massena opened with a 2-0 win Friday, Sept. 11 over the Salmon River Shamrocks. Shane Tarbell booted in the only necessary goal in the first half, just over 27 minutes in. Assists came from Nick Henrie, who was later named tournament MVP, and Ben Sprague. Noah Kormanyos connected for the insurance marker less than five minutes later, with a second assist going to Henrie. Massena's Turner Thomas denied eight shots in the Massena crease. Zack Smith made 12 saves for Salmon River.
The following evening, Massena took the tournament with a 3-2 win over Parishville-Hopkinton. Sprague knocked in the opening goal just over five minutes in and followed with a second in the 30th minute of the contest.
Wyatt Snell reduced their deficit to one about 35 minutes in, assisted by Jordan Memi. Snell tied the game less than 10 minutes later, also assited by Memi. Thomas covered the Massena goal and denied six scoring attemps. Kobe Wells made five saves for P-H.
In the consolation match-up, Salmon River earned a shutout over Hermon-DeKalb, 2-0. Goals came off the feet of Antonie Domino assisted by Skyler Mason and Dino Perkins.
Zach Smith (three saves) and Devin Snider (two saves) split netminding detail for Salmon.
For H-D, Dawson Kerr coverd the goal for seven saves and Cody Wentzel for two.
Henrie fired in the game-winner late in the contest, with the assist going to Bailey Terry.
Henrie was among the All-Tournament Team with Sprague and Thomas. Salmon River's Domino and Jordan Bigness also recived the honor, along with Parishville-Hopkinton's Wyatt Snell, Lucas Snell and Garrett Hayes and Hermon-DeKalb's Hunter Woodrow and Ryan Brown.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9 in Canton, the Raiders fell 1-0 to the Canton Golden Bears.
Ben Bannach booted in the game's loan goal in the second half. Massena's Thomas made 12 saves. Canton's Jake Mattice recorded 14 stops.
Hermon-DeKalb. Both games kick-off at 4 p.m. with the Massena-Salmon River game at Mike Nicholas Field and the other contest slated for the former varsity field.
MCHS Football
The host Massena Red Raiders quickly fell behind in their Friday, Sept. 11 contest against Malone's Franklin Academy Huskies, rebounding in the second half, but weren't able to muster past their visiting opponents.
The final score was 27-12.
The Huskies had earned a 21-0 lead at the half. After returning to the field, they got up to 27-0, followed by two Massena touchdowns in the third and fourth stanzas.
Malone quarterback Camron Gallagher hurled a 29-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Woods in the first quarter, then fired a 59-yard screen pass to Zach Raymond for a second-quarter touchdown. Right before halftime, Gallagher ran the ball into the endzone from 44 yards out. Raymond charged the ball in from the one yard line early in the third quarter.
Red Raider Cedric Mauer ran the ball 23 times for 163 yards. He played as a running back in the first half, switching to quarterback for the second half of the bout. He passed a 14-yard touchdown to Nate Bressard later in the third frame and ran the ball 18 yards for a fourth quarter TD.
Malone's Raymond ran 22 times for 224 yards.
Massena will host Tupper Lake on Saturday, Sept. 19 for the Hall of Fame Game. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
