A Voice from the Eastern Door
Submitted by Connie Gerow, 4-H Tribal Mentoring Site Coordinator
That's right! It's that time of year when the afterschool mentoring 4-H year begins. As the 4-H Tribal Mentoring Coordinator(s) at Salmon River Central Campus School and the St. Regis Mohawk School, Abby Langdon and myself are pleased to share that the 4-H Afterschool Mentoring program is ready and accepting new and old members. If your child was registered last year, re-registration is required.
Venturing into its fourth year at Salmon River Campus School and the third year at the St. Regis Mohawk School, the 4-H Afterschool Mentoring program offers youth ages 10-17 the opportunity to belong to a program that offers a wide range of activities. The goals for this program is to improve their academics by providing a mandatory half-hour of homework time. In addition youth will be engaged in hands-on Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) type projects that will make learning not only fun but engaging the principles of inquiry. Youth will be provided with ample time for organized recreation gaining positive social skills with their peers. Consistent with program goals, family night outings will be held several times throughout the year. At each location a snack will be provided. This program does not have a fee to attend.
Depending on the school in which your child attends, the youth maybe required to stay in his or her classroom until 3:15 with their teacher. If you should have specific questions, please call myself (Connie) at 518.358.4271 or Abby Langdon at 518.483.7403
Enrollment forms for this program are available at each of the locations or one may follow the links to the 4-H Afterschool Mentoring program online at http://franklin.cce.cornell.edu/. Please visit us on Facebook – Cornell Cooperative Extension Franklin County or the Franklin 4-H Group. We hope you will consider this valuable opportunity that awaits your child.
