A Voice from the Eastern Door
AKWESASNE, NY--For the past five years, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Environment Division has reviewed and directed studies on the outdated Hogansburg Hydroelectric Project (a.k.a. “Hogansburg Dam”). These studies examined renewal of the project license, environmental conditions of the project area and dam removal. Based on their recommendation, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is pursuing the removal of the obsolete dam to restore the ecology of the St. Regis River and return project lands to the community.
In preparation for the Hogansburg Dam’s planned removal in the summer of 2016, community presentations will be conducted to discuss the studies and the proposed removal process. It will commence with an initial Tetewatharon Talk Show on CKON 97.3 FM at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Seskehkó:wa/September 22, 2015.
A public meeting will also take place at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Seskehkó:wa/September 23, 2015 in the Environment Division boardroom located at the Akwesasne Business Center, 449 Frogtown Road.
