A Voice from the Eastern Door

Disabilities Awareness Day

There are a lot of resources available in Akwesasne for those who have or know someone with a disability and all of these services were on display in a carnival like setting in Hogansburg.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's Senior Center hosted the event under the big top with a free lunch, animal balloons, entertainment and an Elvis Presley tribute.

But for all the fun that day the real purpose was to show community members where they can go to get help or information if they need it in dealing with disabilities. From housing to education and legal, all aspects for receiving the best services were available.

Although the gathering's name suggested disabilities, it wasn't just for them as anyone needing help in resume writing, interview skills or just information on the job market, the Akwesasne Employment Resource Center was on hand.

Co-Master of Ceremonies Buck Cook and SRMT Director of Communications Brendan White traded off banter of the day's events and specific tables that were in the gathering.

Belly Buttons the Clown was on hand for face painting and making animal balloons and kids and adults alike took advantage.

Big E's provided their delicious chicken and ribs with all the fixings, and CKON 97.3FM was also on hand to update the community on the day's events.

NAMA award winning local artist Bear Fox entertained the group with some of her favorite songs and TJ Jackson also did a few numbers from Elvis Presley which had the crowd buzzing.

Everyone walked home with a full stomach; some took home great door prizes, and useful information on disability services that are locally available.
