A Voice from the Eastern Door
A milestone was reached last week as the first class facility on Kawehnoke celebrated Twenty years of operation. Along the way it has hosted Presidents Cups, Founders Cups and Stanley Cups. It has hosted Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins Alumni players, rookie Ottawa Senators players, former NHLer Gino Odjick, National Hockey tournaments, Rollerderby, Soccer, Kateri Tekakwitha Conferences, Job Fairs and Pow-Wows and even Steven Segal.
The 20th anniversary of the Anowarako:wa Arena was celebrated last week and arena manager Geraldine "Kanastatsi" Jacobs said they are already looking forward to marking a quarter of a century service.
That event in 2020 will commemorate the work of many of the former workers of the facility.
"We are in the planning stages for our 25th anniversary, we have meetings every few months, to acknowledge all arena contributors of the past, to acknowledge past activities, coaches, teams and managers, all past and present staff, Chiefs and Council who were involved," said Jacobs.
Guests were treated to a free luncheon which was enjoyed by all and they socialized while their kids took advantage of the waterslide and bounce houses set up on the soccer field.
Everyone is invited to join in the 25th anniversary celebrations and sign ups are available at the arena. There is still lacrosse action at the arena before the ice goes in. The Mann Jacobs Memorial Lacrosse tournament is this weekend as well as the upcoming Akwesasne International Pow-Wow. Contact Romaine at [email protected] for more information.
