A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Wednesday, July 15, Akwesasne Child and Family Services (ACFS) held a Summer Bash at the Snye Recreation. The event was open to the whole community and was entirely free.
They had two huge waterslides, and free hot dogs and hamburgers. A free family photo booth was run by Resource Development and Foster Recruitment, who are always on the lookout for foster homes. People could use a variety of props and received a picture to take home. The Canoe Journeys program were taking people out on the river in their huge canoe, a family kickball game was being played, and, because everything is better with music, the ACFS mobile unit completed the event with some great tunes.
The bash was a pilot program meant to promote family togetherness, therefore they allowed no drop offs. They also want to find out what the community's needs are to better direct programing. In the future they want to do similar events at the St. Regis and Kawehnoke Recreations. They hope to promote the different centers, coordinate open houses and recruit volunteers for them. ACFS would also like to hold events that teach life skills to the entire family, for instance food preparation and handling safety, and grilling, with hands on learning.
This was the first, and biggest, of three bashes to be held on Wednesdays. The last one is scheduled for July 29 at the Snye Recreation.
