Muskies One for One

After taking an easy win over the Tyendinaga Wolfpack, the Snake Island Muskies got shut down by the Capital Axemen in an overtime decision.

The Muskies now hold the median record of all Quebec Senior B teams, 3-3.

On Sunday, June 7, the Muskies cruised to a 10-2 lead over the Wolfpack after 20 minutes, increasing that to 18-3 at the end of the second stanza. Tyendinaga started a comeback, outscoring 6-3 in the last period, but couldn’t overcome the earlier 15-goal deficit.

Cody Kilcoyne led the offense with four goals and six assists. Joe Hall followed with three goals and five assists. Ky Tarbell scored four times and assisted twice. Trent Jacobs logged six helpers. Jordan Thomas had four goals and an assist. Andrew Lazore tallied a hat trick with an assist, while Clayton Barnes scored once and assisted three times. Chad Thompson scored a goal and had two assists. Shane Francis assisted three plays. Tekari Thompson netted a solo goal. Trey Adams worked the crease for the win.

For the Wolfpack, scoring leaders included Austin Maracle (three goals, one assist), Cody Maracle and Baba Maracle (one goal, three assists each). Tyler Green had a goal and an assist. Cullen Brinklow and Jess Brant Maracle each scored once. Victor Green logged a solo helper. Goaltender Andrew Maracle added a loss to his record.

On Thursday, June 11, the Muskies worked their way to a 7-7 tie before dropping a 9-7 final tally in overtime.

Just shy of the five-minute mark, Axeman Mark Vrandenburg took a play set up by Tim Bergen and Davey Hallett and turned it into the first goal of the game. It took Snake Island nearly 10 minutes to answer, but they would, in duplicate. With 4:55 on the clock, Shane Francis took a pass from Tekari Thompson and Trey Adams to tie it up. With seconds to go in the period, Jordan Thomas passed to Joe Hall, who gave the ball to Ky Tarbell to bring the Muskies to a 2-1 lead with 1.4 seconds left.

After just over a minute into the second period, Capital’s Jordan Joncas was at the end of a play started by Davey Hallett and Nicholas Sanseverino, tying the game 2-all. The Muskies briefly took over, scoring three times between the 2:06 and 8:36 marks. Goals came from Kariwate Mitchell (Thomas, Hall assists), Raweras Mitchell (Francis, Paul Ward assists) and Thomas (Hall assist). With plenty of fight still in them, the Axemen tied the game before the second stanza buzzer sounded. Joncas popped one in at 4:52 with assists going to Tim Bergin and Raj Wasson. Connor Buchanan scored their fifth marker at 2:30.

The teams swapped third-period goals. Buchanan scored his second straight for the Axemen at 4:30, with assists from Bergin and Jason Tasse. Bergin followed less than two minutes later on a play set up by Wasson and Joncas. Hall came through with Snake Island’s next two goals with 11:15 and 3:30 on the clock, respectively. Assists went to Ky Tarbell and Kariwate Mitchell. Those goals were interrupted by Axeman Bergin, who scored a tying goal at 5:30 with assists from Buchanan and Tasse.

Sudden death was no contest, with Capital netting two unanswered goals. They both came from Buchanan at 5:00 (Sanseverino, Bergin assists) and 2:25 (Bergin, Hallett assists).

Chris Chuback added a win to his record, denying 33 Snake Island scoring attempts.

Trey Adams manned the Muskie goal, earning the loss and turning aside 60 shots.

Joe Hall led the Snake Island offense with two goals and five helpers. Jordan Thomas had a goal and two assists. Ky Tarbell, Kariwate Mitchell and Shane Francis each fashioned a goal and an assist. Raweras Mitchell scored once. Solo helpers came from Paul Ward, Tekari Thompson and Trey Adams.

Capital’s top point-getter was Tim Bergin, with two goals and five assists. Connor Buchanan scored four times and assisted once. Jordan Joncas had two goals and two assists. Davey Hallett and Jason Tasse each had three assists. Raj Wasson and Nicholas Sanseverino each assisted two plays. Mark Vrandenburg netted a singleton.

The Muskies next face the host Kahnawake Mohawks on Friday, June 19 at 8 p.m. at Kahnawake Sports Complex. On Sunday, June 21, they play the host Vermont Voyageurs at 2 p.m. at Essex Skating Facility.
