A Voice from the Eastern Door
Massena had its premier season as part of SVA (Stamford Volleyball Association), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting volleyball for the 2014-2015 season. The season started in December and ran through the end of April. SVA club was a combination of girls from St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Clinton counties.
Massena SVA had four teams with female athletes from ages 12 to 18 competing on four different teams: 15U, 16U, 17U, and 18U.
The club had what Coach Margaret Trombly described as "an excellent first season with a number of teams making playoffs for 75 percent of the tournaments."
"Coaches Annie Smith (15U), Angelina Converse (16U), Trombly (17U) and Nicole Deshaies (18U) worked very hard this season and the results showed their dedication and commitment to the program," Trombly said.
The 16U and 17U teams attended regionals near Middletown, with the 17U team making the gold bracket.
"Once we promote the sport within the area we start to streamline the club and make it more competitive. The organization is known for showcasing the most talented athletes in the area that results in top competition when tournament time happens. Then of course the next step is to assist the girls in finding a college to play for if they want to pursue that route," said Managing Director of SVA Beth McCanney, a West Leyden native who took over the juniors program in 2012.
SVA tryouts for the 2015-2016 season will be posted on the website this fall. Updates will be posted at http://www.stamfordvolleyball.com
