LINDA LAZORE "KANERATHONTHA"

AKWESASNE – Mrs. Linda "Kanerathontha" Lazore, 62, of 1345 River Road, Snye, unexpectedly passed away Monday afternoon, June 1, 2015 at her home.

Kanerathontha was born September 27, 1952 in Toronto, Ontario, the daughter of the late Peter "Chico" and Minnie Arquette Lazore. She first attended schools in Snye and St. Regis before transferring to Cornwall and graduating from General Vanier. She later graduated from Trent University and SUNY Potsdam. In August 1972, she married William Jacobs at St. Regis Catholic Church; he predeceased her in August 1977.

Most recently she was working with the Akwesasne Membership Board as a minute taker for their meetings and also as a receptionist at the MCA Kawehnoke Medical Clinic. She also operated Chico's Marina and Rachel's Café and managed the Akwesasne Fuel Station for many years, and at one time ran Cook's Gas Bar. She was also an Essential Oils Distributor. Linda was an organizer and director of the Mohawk Nation Pow Wow, and was general manager of one of the Akwesasne Minor Hockey teams. Kanerathontha was also an author, writing and publishing the novel Sacred Ground. She also was an award winning poet, having been awarded while at the birthday party of Milton Berle while in California. She was an avid sports fan, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays, New England Patriots, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. She enjoyed traveling, participating in powwows and going to craft shows. She was also a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group.

Kanerathontha is survived by her daughters, Virginia "Kawisokwas" Jacobs and her husband, Sean Oakes, Heather "Wahiahawi" Jacobs and her companion, Derek A. Cook, and Crystal "Tekaierente" Jacobs and her companion, Derek James Cook, all of Akwesasne; a chosen son, Dyson, at home; her grandchildren, Rachel, Montana, Haley, Jazmine, Jersey, Destiny, Dash, Dai, Derrika, and Rowan; her sisters, Peggy Lazore and her companion, Roy Swamp of Akwesasne; and Lola Arquette of Akwesasne; chosen brother, Mike Cree of Akwesasne; her god children, Lucy Lazore and Edward Lazore; her uncle, Dennis Lazore; her sister-in-laws, Pauline and Ronnie Lazore, Sheilah Jacobs and Dave, Josie Swamp, and Diana Mitchell; her brother-in-laws Ronnie and Dewey Jacobs; a dear friend, Levi Peters of Akwesasne; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a longtime companion, Matthew John Pyke on May 1, 1990; her sister, Kathy Lazore on May 3, 1986; and her brothers, Stanley Lazore on December 25, 1975; Peter Lazore, Jr. on August 1, 1999; Harvey Arquette in 1951; and Jedd Whitewater.

Friends called at her home from Friday to Sunday. Funeral Services were Sunday at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, and burial followed in Solomon Road Cemetery.
