A Voice from the Eastern Door
On May 19, 2015, the Association of Senior Citizens of Franklin County held their spring gathering, "The Magic of Springtime," at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort.
There was a large Chinese auction, a 50/50, singing, and of course great food.
The Akwesasne Singers started off the celebration, singing a few songs in English and Mohawk, including "The Lord's Prayer," "Amazing Grace" and "America" which they dedicated to all the veterans.
Susan Wilson Scott did the Invocation and everyone sat down for a delicious meal.
After the meal Susan Schrader, the Director of the Association of Senior Citizens in Franklin County, spoke to the crowd. She said this year's theme for Older Americans Month, which is May, is "Get Into the Act." Schrader thanked everyone for their support saying because of them they are able to improve the lives of so many.
County Legislator and Chairman Billy Jones spoke about "learning from experience," saying that's what he respects about this generation, the wisdom.
Becky Preve, Director for the Franklin County Office of the Aging, spoke and thanked Albany, the Board of Legislators, and her staff for all their hard work. She talked about the future, estimating that 20% of Americans will be seniors, "What a voice!" she exclaimed. She also honored two special people, Terry Trudeau and Fred Holmes.
Corinda Crossdale, Executive Director of the New York State Office for the Aging, made the trip from Albany to attend the event. She thanked everyone at the local Offices of the Aging saying, "You are the lifeline for many people, you are critical to allowing people to remain in the their homes. The value of your contributions are billions of dollars and millions of hours of service. That's a tremendous value and I came to say thank you for your service and contribution."
After the speakers came the Hat Parade and winners received beautiful flower baskets. The event was capped off by the Chinese auction winners and was a great time shared by many friends.
