NNATC Receives $124K Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant for a Community Theater

The Onake Corporation at the Native North American Travelling College received $124,200 over 12 months to enhance arts programming for youth in Akwesasne. This investment will increase traditional cultural knowledge by developing a performing arts program, supporting the travel troupe and renovating the amphitheater. An Akwesasne Theater Program will encompass a multifaceted approach to culture including numerous initiatives. As our community expands and becomes interested in the ever-popular multimedia trends, we as a Cultural Center, must keep ourselves current. These initiatives will aid in cultural education, preservation, and promotion. This will also increase relationships with neighboring communities and aid in combating stereotypes and misconceptions. This includes the following:

• Increase of cultural educational programming in the form of presentations at the center

• Multimedia and print publications- curriculum aid models and interactive tools

• Increased relations with neighboring communities.

• Infrastructure revitalization of our existing amphitheater.

• Creation of Cultural History & Contemporary Productions (DVDs, CDs, & MP3s) through our audio visual department.

• The creation of theater capacity through community outreach.

• Workshop Training in multiple disciplines to accompany the theater arts, ten workshops include make up artistry, monologue, combat, puppetry, lighting, sound, scenery, and costume design

• Increasing our website capabilities-online bookstore accessibility and credit card accessible vending
