AKWESASNE MEMBERSHIP BOARD NOTICE

In order for the Akwesasne Membership Board to determine if an application for Akwesasne Membership will be approved or denied, the Board must consider the following criteria:

a) Whether the applicant was born in the community

b) Commitment to Mohawk culture, traditions, lifestyle, and knowledge of language and customs

c) Individual or family ties to Members of the community

d) Member of a Clan

e) Degree of involvement in the affairs of the community

f) Reasons for wanting to be a member

This criteria is in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code. The following persons have applied for Membership under the Akwesasne Membership Code.

Taylor Peters, age 17, daughter of John Craig Peters (Akwesasne) and April Viscount-Knoll, a non-Indian.

Raven Thompson, age 18, daughter of Bridget Thompson (Akwesasne) and David MacDonald, a non-Indian.

Chay Jacobs, age 18, son of Patricia Jacobs (Akwesasne).

Tianna Francis-Forgues, age 18, daughter of Natasha Francis (Akwesasne) and Corey Forgues, a non-Indian.

Jacob Sunday, age 18, son of Lynn Sunday Mitchell (Akwesasne) and Gerald Russell, a non-Indian.

Jenna Clute, age 17, daughter of William Clute (Akwesasne) and Danielle Trombley, a non-Indian.

Tasha Thomas, age 27, is registered with the Shubenacadie Band (Nova Scotia). She is the daughter of Paul Thomas (Akwesasne) and Michele Taylor (Shubenacadie Band). She is applying for Akwesasne Membership and for a Residency Permit

Ciele Samuel, age 31, daughter of Honora Bonaparte (Akwesasne) and Charles Samuel, a non-Indian. She is applying for Akwesasne Membership and for a Residency Permit.

Nolan Marc Johnson, age 23, has applied for renewal of his Residency Permit.

Wayne Samphier, age 46, has applied for renewal of his Residency Permit.

Micheal Russell, age 26, has applied for renewal of his Residency Permit.

Community Members have until Friday, May 1, 2015 to indicate whether they wish to make submissions regarding any of the above individuals by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics at 613-575-2250 Ext. 1013.

At the Akwesasne Membership Board’s meeting of April 11, 2015, the Board denied the Residency Application of Sierra Martin and cancelled her Membership Application. The Board approved five year probationary membership for Emily King and Aaron St. Dennis, and granted them one year Residency Permits. The Board granted full Akwesasne membership to Sean David and Andrew Chubb.

Community members wishing to appeal the Membership Board’s decisions on the above applicants have 30 days to appeal to the Council of Elders by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics.
