US Lacrosse Native American Scholarships

The Tewaaraton Award is pleased to announce the Annual Outstanding Native American High School Scholarship. The award will go to the one Native male and one Native female lacrosse player. The winners will be invited to attend the Tewaaraton Award Banquet in Washington DC.

The objective of the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship is to recognize and reward exceptional students’ academic and athletic achievement. All awards are based on the merits of academic achievement, athletic performance and ambition. Additionally, nominees are asked to articulate what lacrosse means to them as a student, an athlete, and a member of their community. Since one of the primary goals of the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship is to honor lacrosse’s Native American roots, the selection committee will weigh heavily on this aspect of the application. Students must be a member of the Iroquois community, enrolled in a secondary school (i.e., high school) and be in good academic standing to be eligible for this scholarship.

A selection committee will complete the process by reviewing all applications and selecting the recipients. The committees are comprised of Tewaaraton Foundation Board members, lacrosse coaches and exemplary members of the Native American community.

Over the past eight years, The Tewaaraton Award has proudly given over $80,000 in scholarships to Native American high school lacrosse players through its Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship Program. These scholarships are awarded annually on a highly competitive basis to one Native American female and one Native American male college bound lacrosse player. For 2015, the scholarships recipients will recieve $10,000 each over the course of two years. The first $5,000 will go toward their freshman year tuition and the second $5,000 will go toward their second year tuition.
