Tsi Snaihne Celebrates National Language Day

Submitted by AMBE

March 31st is National Language Day this year at Tsi Snaihne school we had two local visitors. Feryn Karahkwiiostha King and Kenny Tehawisoren Perkins presented their traditional hoop dance and Social songs. The students really enjoyed watching Karakwiiostha present her hoop dance presentation. Throughout the presentation by Karahkwiiostha, she represented the animals and beings that are depicted in the Ohenton Karihwatehkwen (Opening Address). The students were totally amazed by Karahkwiiostha. You could hear the students saying out loud each animal that she made with the hoops. Tehawisoren explained to the students about how we came to adopt the Alligator dance as a social dance, here in Akwesasne, from the Seminole natives in Florida . Tehawisoren has been singing at our school for the past few years for various occasions such as National Language Day and Jake Fire Day.
