A Voice from the Eastern Door
Young boys in the community got a chance to spend some time with buds, gets some helpful hints about careers, and learn some culture, arts and crafts.
The Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment held the Boys Day Out event at the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club on Rooseveltown Road last Saturday.
The event was divided up into different areas, with different organizations lending a hand, and the topics ranged from career interests, bullying, self-awareness, culture and addictions.
Jordan Tarbell of Akwesasne Child and Family Services along with Robert White of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service gave a presentation on the different occupations the boys might be interested in pursuing.
Using a Smartboard presentation they used local and stock pictures of jobs like Ironworking, Police work, Fire Fighting, Computers, the Military and Business and many others.
Some photos had Akwesasne men and women and the boys enjoyed picking them out and then hearing about what they did in their work.
White held a mini-workshop on respect and Harvey Herne talked about addictions.
Earlier the boys made drums with Ian Clute instructing them, and they enjoyed this project. Joey David did the Ohenton Karihwatehkwen and he also gave a presentation on Roles and Responsibilities of young men in society.
Today it is very hard to get children to be interested in anything and being able to stick with it. This was addressed in the Boys Day Out by Everett Lazore of A.C.F.S., PJ Burns of St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police and Joey David. They did a component about finding their passion in something and sticking with it. Lazore also presented on Bullying and Self-confidence.
Burns also added a talk about consequences.
They also played ball games in the multi-purpose room and enjoyed meals prepared by Everett Lazore of A.C.F.S. and owner of Big E's.
The event was also sponsored by Wholistic Health and Wellness, Intensive Prevention Program, MCA Community Health Nurses and the Akwesasne Wellness Center. Each Participant received a goody bag and hopefully they took home some valuable information about their society and themselves.
