Massena Lady Raiders Acknowledged

The Massena village and school boards each issued proclamations recognizing the Massena Lady Raiders for their 2014-2015 state hockey title, the first in the team's history.

The Board of Education recognized the team on Thursday, March 12.

They recognized team members individually, including Akwesasne residents Iakohehiio Cook, Kahsenniiostha Jacobs, Ellexia Lazore, KC Herne, Amber Thomas and Bailey Thomas.

Interim Superintendent of Schools William Flynn noted in the proclamation that the team's combined 96 average qualified them as a state Scholar Athlete Team.

"I thank everyone on the school board and in the school community for providing this opportunity for our student athletes," Coach Jennifer Gray told the board. "The memories they take with them will last a lifetime."

On Tuesday, March 3, the Village Board of Trustees made a similar proclamation.

Mayor Tim Currier also pointed to the squad's classroom achievements.

"You're the epitome of what we mean by student-athletes and they should be congratulated for that," he said.

Currier also gave thanks to the team's families and larger Massena community for standing behind them.

"I recognize the great sacrifices you have made ... not just the girls, but the parents," Currier said.

"It was an amazing experience and we couldn't have done it without all of you," Gray said.

The team clinched their first-ever state crown over the Kenmore East Bulldogs 3-0 in Buffalo.

They finished the regular season with a 10-8 record before going undefeated in post-season play.
