A Voice from the Eastern Door
The lacrosse season started last weekend in Cornwall. The Akwesasne Women Warriors lacrosse club was at the Benson Center and it had a Hollywood actor and an overtime championship game.
Rack City placed first in the preliminaries going undefeated with ten points. The Cornwall Island Sturgeon Bellies (4-1) placed second. The Lightning (3-2) was third with six points and the Untouchables (2-3) placed fourth with three points.
The K-Towners and Gunnerz were the other teams.
In the semi-finals Rack City defeated the Untouchables 11-9 and Lightning edged Cornwall Island 10-9.
That set up the championship game between Rack City and Lightning with the first period ending in a scoreless tie. In the second, the Lightning scored first with Rack City scoring ten seconds later. Rack City scored late in the second to take their first lead of the game, 2-1, and that was how the period ended. In the third, Rack City scored to pull ahead 3-1, but with seven minutes left the Lightning scored on a nice passing play around the net and with one minute left they again scored to tie and send it into overtime.
The Lightning scored in the extra period.
This was a benefit for the Akwesasne Women Warriors lacrosse team and taking in the action was Adam Beach who has appeared in many Hollywood movies. He was in the movie Windtalkers with Nicholas Cage, Flags Of Our Fathers - directed by Clint Eastwood, and is currently in the television series Arctic Air.
Taking part in the tournament were Cree Cathers and Ty Thompson who both appeared in the movie Crooked Arrows.
