Salmon River Sports Review

By: Rachelle Garrow-Hayes

Coach Shawn Martin and his basketball squad have come a long way from losing every game a few seasons ago, to two league wins two years ago, six league wins last season to doing what no other team in Section 10 has been able to do this season...lead Ogdensburg at halftime. The Shamrocks (12-6) may have lost 61-48 to the OFA powerhouse in the Section 10 Class B playoffs but they did it in a way that earned them respect and class.

Salmon River came out hard against the two-time Section 10 Champs, Blue Devils, to lead 28-25 at halftime. After coming out of the locker room, OFA rallied together and scored 11 points at the beginning of the third and took a 22-7 third quarter run. The Shamrocks fell behind 47-35 but didn't give up the fight. Antoine Domino netted a three pointer at the end of the third and two at the beginning of the fourth along with a three by Tyler Brooks to cut the deficit for Salmon, 54-48. A three pointer and a rebound for OFA sealed the win to give them their third Section 10 title.

Domino led the Shamrock offense with 15 points, four steals and four assists. Jordan Wood added eight points including two threes in the first half to help give Salmon the lead. Jordan Bigness, Russ Oakes (4 rebounds, 2 assists), Myles Jacobs, Ben Kelly (4 rebounds, 3 assists), and Tyler Brooks ( 5 rebounds) all contributed five points each for the Shamrocks. The Shamrocks were able to keep OFA's Kinnon LaRose to just 22 points instead of his usual average of 40 points a game.

"Defense is what got us here and I thought we played great defense today" commented SRCS Coach Shawn Martin. "I could not be prouder of this team, the coaches, the heart this team has. When you work hard good things happen. The guys worked hard and we are looking toward next year".

The Shamrocks answered back at the 10:54 mark to when Chad George finished off a play set up by Bryton Burns and Skkylar Thomas to even the score.

Four minutes into the second, the Icemen made it 2-1 on a power play goal when Austin Cousineau, assisted by Tristen Harvey and Coby Munson, found the back of the Salmon net. A little over two minutes later Isaac Barkley pounded in a rebound with the help of Cousineau and Zeb Zagrobelny earning the assists. Sean David cut the Salmon deficit to one when he converted off of Thomas at the 7:22 mark.
