VOTE NO!
I am concerned about the Matrimonial Real Property Law that is currently being voted upon by the community. I believe that you should vote no or do not vote.
There is a need to have approximately 2000 members voting to arrive at the magic number to have this law accepted by the Federal Government. It has been rejected by the Federal Government already.
This is one more step in becoming a municipality. "Are we ready for this?" is a question that we should be asking ourselves.
Common-law relationships are not recognized in the province of Quebec and also New York State. If a couple from that section has a problem and they are not satisfied with the decision that is made in an Akwesasne court and you go to the outside, you lose right away as that relationship is not recognized.
There are already over 200 land disputes on the territory of Akwesasne. Why would we add to this by creating this law?
There have been low numbers in the turnouts for the consultation process so how can we determine what the pros and cons are for this law.
In a letter dated November 8, 2013, the Minster of AANDC Bernard Valcourt stated that he encourages community members to resolve our concerns with our elected leadership directly. This has not happened.
Some land disputes that have been taken to outside courts have cost tens of thousands of dollars to community members.
Is there a mechanism for the traditional governments to have a say in this process?
All of the traditional governments should have their voice heard in this matter.
Think before you agree to this law. Research before you vote. Do not just say yes because someone comes to your residence to have you vote. Understand what you are voting for.
Cordially,
Beverly Pyke
