NNATC Opens Akwesasne Hidden Treasures Exhibit

The Native North American Travelling College recently opened their Akwesasne Hidden Treasures exhibit on Thursday, February 5, 2015. The exhibit showcased hidden or forgotten items Akwesasne community members found as having significance, either historical or personal. The Hidden Treasures exhibit is a fine representation of original, historical and personal items professionally displayed by Amanda Tarbell and the staff of the Native North American Travelling College. This was Tarbell's first curated exhibit and she hopes the community takes time to stop in and view the various artifacts which range from 'classic' metal Star Wars Lunchbox, to historical documents that were once housed in an attic on Kawehnoke.

Tarbell reached out to our Elders at Iakhihsohtha and the SRMT Seniors for items handed down from generations past.

Tarbell mentioned how our Elders were very possessive of their items and many allowed only photos to be taken, rather than displaying the actual item. All items on display are on loan from the owner and will be returned back in the original state to the owner. Some items were dated as early as the 1800's. On display were contemporary historical items such as old lunch boxes and a big bubblehead of Charlie Brown.

Tarbell stated, "This is our first, "Akwesasne Hidden Treasures" exhibit and we hope next year's exhibit will have even more participation from community members."

This exhibit will run until the end of March 2015.
