A Voice from the Eastern Door
In a repeat of last year's state championship match, the Massena Red Raiders skated to a 5-3 win over the Ithaca Little Red. Massena wore its red road jerseys rather than home white shirts, and much of the crowd was clad in red. The game was played Friday, Jan. 23, which many marked as the "Wear Red For Fallen Raiders" day of tribute.
After a stalemate first period, the Raiders fashioned a 3-1 lead in the second period and outscored their opponents 2-1 in the closing frame. Wyatt Wilmhurst put Massena on the scoreboard 1:27 into the second period. He was unassisted. Ithaca's Collin Case tied the game about 7:30 later, also unassisted. Wilmhust came through with his second goal of the game two minutes later, with the assist going to Zach Ward. Josh Underwood bolstered their lead to two 17 seconds later, with assists going to Patrick Manning and Ben Sprague. After 2:24 in the third period, Ithaca's Nate Walker closed the lead to one, assisted by Sam Roach. Red Raider Bailey Hewitt knocked in fourth Massena goal 29 seconds later, the eventual game-winner. Maddox Merry and Evan Kassian assisted. Walker poked in the last Ithaca marker with just under seven minutes on the clock. Sprague poked in Massena's insurance goal with 1:33 on the clock, assisted by Manning and Merry. Jeffrey Bain kept 13 shots out of Massena's net. Griffin Varricchio stopped 21 pucks for the Little Red.
MCS Lady Raider's Hockey
The Massena Lady Raiders recently enjoyed back-to-back shutout victories against Albany Academy and Salmon River before falling to Potsdam. On Monday, Jan. 19, the Lady Raiders left the ice with a 4-0 win against Albany Academy. The game was also the team's "Pink at the Rink" fundraiser, which raised money for local cancer charities. Amber Thomas fired in the game-winner 8:07 into regulation on a play set up by Ellen Greene. Bailey Thomas connected for the team's second goal 11:51 into the second period, assisted by KC Herne and Abbie Paquin. Molly O'Connell shot in the third Massena marker 4:28 into the closing frame, assists going to Amber Thomas and Bailey Dillabough. Herne scored the final goal of the game just over a minute later, assisted by Mailhot and Greene. Kyrsten Stone deflected 24 pucks for Massena. Zoe Shannon made 23 saves for Albany.
Hitting the road against the Salmon River Shamrocks on Thursday, Jan. 22, the Lady Raiders played to a 4-0 win. Molly O'Connell connected for the only necessary Massena goal 1:04 into the second stanza, assisted by Dillabough. KC Herne connected for the insurance goal two minutes later, assisted by Abbie Paquin. Dillabough fired in Massena goal number three 11:35 into the frame, assisted by Amber Thomas. Iakohehiio Cole fashioned the fourth Massena goal, assisted by Shaunessy LaClair just before the second period buzzer. Stone blocked 12 shots for Massena. Lady Shamrock Jenny DeJung turned aside 34 scoring attempts.
The Lady Raiders fell to the host Potsdam Sandstoners 2-1 on Saturday, Jan. 24. Emily Wilmhurst put Massena out to an early lead at 6:21 in the opening frame. Mia Jermano assisted. But Kaila Grant tied the game 3:41 into the second period and went on to score the game-winner 7:42 into the closing stanza. Massena's Stone kept 26 scoring attempts at bay. Sidney Molnar blocked 12 shots for Potsdam.
MCHS Wrestling
The Massena Red Raiders grapplers fell 36-24 to the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Nolan Terrance picked up six points in a forfeit. Austin Amo came in with Massena's only pinfall victory, besting Cory Wier in 3:19. They competed at 152 pounds. Gavin Perrine at 132 pounds and Jaret Warriner at 182 each received forfeits, Massena's only other wins. OFA's Tanner Lapiene pinned Skyler Cameron at 120 pounds. OFA's Donald Baker picked up a forfeit for the 106 pound bout and Cordell David did the same for the 113 pound class. Bailey Phelps took a win by decision over Raider Hunter Perrine for the 160 pound match. Blue Devil William Pearson claimed a decision over Jacob Stiles for the 220 pound contest. OFA's Brody Sheppard took a decision against Michael Brown at 138 pounds. Allen Smithers was by decision over Massena's Sinclair Babb. The two wrestled at 170 pounds.
MCHS Basketball
The Massena Red Raiders got out to an early lead again the Franklin Academy Huskies, working their way to a 75-55 win. The team wore their red road jerseys, along with many fans also dressed in red, to mark the Friday, Jan. 23 "Wear Red For Fallen Raiders" day of tribute.
Dante Viskovich headed up Massena's scoresheet, nailing 23 points, including making four shots from the three-point line. Logan Deshane fashioned 12 points. Bailey LaBarge connected for nine points, Bailey Terry eight, Nick McKeel seven and Zevon Viskovich six. Nathaniel Currier and Dan Wing each tallied five points.
Camron Gallagher worked for 17 points on the Franklin Academy side. Ben Wally connected for 12. Jayson Spaulding and Jake Poupore each recorded seven points. Nate Revette tallied four points, Charles O'Connor three and Pat Bilow and Nick Revette scored two each.
