A Voice from the Eastern Door
In order for the Akwesasne Membership Board to determine if an application for Akwesasne Membership will be approved or denied, the Board must consider the following criteria:
a) Whether the applicant was born in the community
b) Commitment to Mohawk culture, traditions, lifestyle, and knowledge of language and customs
c) Individual or family ties to Members of the community
d) Member of a Clan
e) Degree of involvement in the affairs of the community
f) Reasons for wanting to be a member
This criteria is in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code. The following persons have applied for Membership under the Akwesasne Membership Code.
Paul Mitchell Arbour, age 55, son of Rita Oakes Arbour (Akwesasne) and Gerald Arbour, a non-Indian.
Kaetlyn Alice Payette, age 16, daughter of Laura Armstrong (Akwesasne) and Ronald Payette, a non-Indian.
Chelsea Margaret Rose Gagne, age 16, daughter of Allison Lazore Gagne (Akwesasne) and Richard Gagne, a non-Indian.
Lakeisha Adrianne Mitchell, age 18, daughter of Cynthia Mitchell (Akwesasne) and Donald Vanhouser, a non-Indian.
Kayden Cook-Jackson, age 16, son of Jerrald Jackson (Akwesasne) and Frances Cook, a non-member.
Sarah Lafrance, age 15, daughter of David Kyle Benedict (Akwesasne) and Natalie Lafrance Jackson, a non-Indian.
Sierrra Katsitsientha Martin, age 19, daughter of Kevin Martin (Akwesasne) and Marnie Jorgensen, a non-member. She is also applying for a Residency Permit under the Akwesasne Residency Law.
John Richard Clark, age 50, son of Ava Maria Bero (Akwesasne) and John Clark, a non-Indian. He is also applying for a Residency Permit under the Akwesasne Residency Law.
Community Members have until Friday, February 6, 2015 to indicate whether they wish to make submissions regarding the above individuals by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics.
At the Akwesasne Membership Board’s meeting of December 13, 2014, the Membership Board granted full Akwesasne Membership to Alanna Herne, Morgan Thompson and Raymond Ladouceur-David. The Board denied the Membership Application of Kelsey Boots. The Board approved a one year residency permit for Laura Rose Thompson and cancelled the Membership applications of Tekoma Cole and Aaron Presley Kaienkwirekowa David.
Community members wishing to appeal the Membership Board’s decisions on the above applicants have 30 days to appeal to the Council of Elders by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics. The Office of Vital Statistics is located at the Cornwall Island Administration Building #3, and can be contacted by calling (613) 575-2250 ext. 1011.
