The Massena Red Raiders boy’s hockey team left the Salmon River Christmas Tournament with an even record. They played over the weekend of Dec. 13 and 14 at Tom Cavanaugh Arena in Fort Covington
For their opening game, they won 7-2 over the Salmon River Shamrocks.
Even Kassian led the Raider icemen with a hat trick and a helper. Wyatt Wilmhurst recorded two goals.
Red Raider Ryan Moffit opened the scoreboard with an assist from Dalton Mullin after 10:56 on the ice. Kassian came through for the second goal of the game two minutes into the middle stanza, with an assist going to Jacob Vierno. Wilmhurst fired off the game-winner 1:39 later on a play set up by Nick Henrie. Moffit, Kassian and Wilmhurst would score before Shamrock Tanner Tarbell put them on the board with 10:01 in the closing frame. Otto Thomas and Ty Boots recorded assists. Massena’s last goal went to Kassian. Lawrence Tarbell notched Salmon River’s final marker with assists from Keenan Herne and Tyler Sisto.
Massena netminder Logan Brothers turned 16 shots. Jarred Jackson denied 30 scoring attempts for the Shamrocks.
The following night, Canisius knocked Massena off the bracket. Massena opened the scoreboard at 8:44 with a Kassian goal, assisted by J.P. Chauvin. Ian Fitzgerald answered for Canisius almost immediately following the second-period puck drop. Wilmhurst put Massena back in the lead just over a minute later with Dylan Stone and Devin Page fashioning assists.
Canisius came back with three goals from Brendan Dallas, Kurt Villani and Max Gates.
Jeff Baine stopped 19 pucks for Massena.
