A Voice from the Eastern Door
Kateri Hall was the spot for the first annual Christmas Cookie Sale and Chili Cook-off. The event was put on by the Fundraising Committee and Friends of the St. Regis Mission Church. For $5 you got the chance to test out and vote in the chili contest, and it also got you a meal ticket. Ten dollars got you a dozen cookies of your choice, and there were many to choose from. All benefited the St. Regis Mission Church.
There were 10 contestants in the chili cook-off said Everett Lazore, key organizer of the chili cook-off. Contestants were anonymous until the winners were announced, and cooks didn't have to give up their secret recipe either. "We have chilies made with moose meat, chicken, venison, hominy, people tried different things to make their chili stand out," said Everett.
Chili cook-off contestants were John Herne, Everett Lazore, Matthew and Nathan Rourke, Jerome "Moochie" McDonald, A.J. Adams, Junior Ransom, Nathan Sunday, Brent Ransom, Dave Mitchell and Phil Tarbell.
The trophy for the first place winner of the cook-off was a beautiful sweetgrass and splint chili pepper made by Linda Jackson. Winners of the chili cook-off were: 1st place John Herne, 2nd place Jerome "Moochie" McDonald, 3rd place Brent Ransom, and Honorable Mention went to Dave Mitchell.
For the Christmas cookie sale, there were about 40 bakers who made four dozen cookies each, which in the end amounted to almost 50 varieties of Christmas cookies. See the Fundraising Committee's "Niawen" in this issue for the full list of all the bakers who donated their time and baking talent.
The event also included a special guest, Santa Claus, who listened to the wishes of children next to a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
"Early this morning looked like Grand Central Station," said Minerva White. "People not only brought in cookies, but then purchased cookies. We had tree and we needed Santa Claus, and that came through. Everybody did a great job."
Darlene Drew crafted a beautifully decorated Christmas Gingerbread House for the event. This was raffled off as an added fundraiser at $1.00 a chance and the Gingerbread House was won by Amber Montour of Akwesasne.
Marilyn White said, "Jolene Garrow came in the day of the sale with at least 7 different varieties of beautiful and festive cookies. She did this without us even asking her to bake additional varieties and would like to thank her for all her support. And all the bakers deserve a great big Niawen for all their help. As to the volunteers, Becky Papineau, Caroline Peters, Laura Morris and Nanci Ransom deserve some extra special thanks for all their help in making sure the cookies were labeled properly and displayed beautifully. And of course, Minerva White who was key in organizing the event."
Marilyn added, "Matthew Rourke stated that people leaving the cookie sale said 'What a fantastic event and that is the way you organize a cookie sale!' Hearing this made all our hard work worthwhile."
