A Voice from the Eastern Door

Big Baby

Big brother and little brother have really come around and taken on their roles as big brothers to the baby quite well. Little brother is especially sweet to him. I love when he talks to him and the baby smiles a huge mouth-wide-open smile. The baby just started laughing this month so a big goal of little brother’s is to get a laugh out of the baby. It seems to be the best reward for all his silliness. There are moments of pure love between them. Where little brother will lie close to him and rub his head and tell him he loves him. Big brother is in love with the baby’s tiny hands and feet. He has no problem picking him up either. There have been times that I’ve been in the shower or the other room and I’ll hear the baby start to fuss and then become quiet. In the whole minute from when the baby started to fuss until I walk into the room, his big brother will already be holding him. So between dad and big big brother jumping to the rescue every time the baby makes a noise, the baby doesn’t know what to do the few times he has to actually wait for me. That’s when he lets out this bossy little yell. It’s not a real cry that he has for a wet diaper or hunger; it’s literally a yell as if to say, “How come you aren’t holding me, hurry up!”

When he’s at work with me he really makes noise when he has to be put down and rarely stays asleep for twenty minutes unless he’s being cuddled. Thankfully a coworker loaned me a baby bjorn carrier so I put him in there this week and he seems content in there. If he’s tired he can lay his head on my chest and sleep. If he’s nosy he can be turned to face outward and see everything that is going on. He really likes that. He gives away plenty of smiles when he can see everyone. The last month he has been especially clingy. The cold he had didn’t help matters. So now that he is much better he still wants to cuddle. I see now why there are so many baby carriers on the market. Some babies need that mother’s touch 24/7. I remember little brother being that way until he was one. Could never let me out of his sight. The baby isn’t quite so particular. He’ll settle for anyone holding him so long as he’s being held. That in itself can be a workout since he hit seventeen pounds at three months! What a chunky little boss he is! So his nickname with his brothers has become our big baby.
