A Voice from the Eastern Door

Parade of Nations

The Parade of Nations recently held their biggest fundraiser of the year this past weekend at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30, 2014. The Parade of Nations present three fundraisers a year; the Parade of Nations, the Seaway Valley Train Show and The Kite Fest.

Through its "Light in the Tunnel" program, the Parade of Nations seeks to promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion of developmentally challenged individuals and those with special needs living in Akwesasne, Cornwall and SD&G. As well, the Parade of Nations seeks to bring awareness to the uniqueness of the many cultures in Cornwall, the Haudenosaunee Culture, to bring about tolerance through sharing cultures, traditions and knowledge.

Starting with a parade of all nations represented, flag bearers entered and marched after the official welcoming, dignitary's speeches and the prayer of gratitude. Many nations were represented, including Thailand, Pakistan, Japan, Sri Lanka, Togo (Africa), Vietnam, Afghanistan, China, India and Saudi Arabia. The Native North American Travelling College performed several friendship songs along with the Women's Dance.

On Sunday, nations once again took part in a parade of nations with flag bearers proudly waving their national flag. Sunday afternoon wound down with a People Fashion Show contest and several other local performances.
