SRMS Holds "Celebrating Our Heritage" Event

On Friday, St. Regis Mohawk School students wore their ribbon dresses and ribbon shirts to school and celebrated Native American Day with storytelling, singing and dancing.

In the gym, Kanienkehaka Ratirennenhawi hosted a social, doing round, stomp and alligator dances, among others. Not only did the students learn the steps, they were also taught the purpose and meaning of each dance.

In the multipurpose room, the morning featured Dave Fadden. He told the kids the history and importance of storytelling. One story he told the students was how the birds learned their song. In the afternoon, the multipurpose room was filled with the songs of Bear Fox.

Each of the classes at SRMS got the chance to participate in each activity, and all not only had a great time but learned a lot too.
