Mohawk Council of Akwesasne PUBLIC NOTICE

In order for the Akwesasne Membership Board to determine if an application for Akwesasne Membership will be approved or denied, the Board must consider the following criteria:

a) Whether the applicant was born in the community

b) Commitment to Mohawk culture, traditions, lifestyle, and knowledge of language and customs

c) Individual or family ties to Members of the community

d) Member of a Clan

e) Degree of involvement in the affairs of the community

f) Reasons for wanting to be a member

This criteria is in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code. The following persons have applied for Membership under the Akwesasne Membership Code.

Alanna Herne, age 18, daughter of Christopher Herne (Akwesasne) and Sonya Cornman Herne (Oneida).

Cassandra Ritz, age 18, daughter of Louise Garrow Ritz (Akwesasne) and David Ritz, a non-Indian.

Kelsey Boots, age 19, daughter of Wayne Boots (Akwesasne) and Karen Helmer, a non-Indian.

Austin Burns-Peddle, age 18, son of Elizabeth Burns (Akwesasne) and Keith Peddle, a non-Indian.

Tekoma Cole, age 18, daughter of Charles Cole (Akwesasne) and Tracy Tyo, a non-Indian.

Sarah Tarolli, age 23, daughter of Margaret Jacobs (Akwesasne) and Collin Tarolli, a non-Indian.

Morgan Thompson, age 18, daughter of Harold Thompson (Akwesasne) and Deborah Peters, a non-Indian.

Jordan Johnson, age 16, son of Angela Johnson (Akwesasne).

Devin Delormier, age 17, son of Randy Delormier (Akwesasne) and Aimee McGillivray, a non-Indian.

Sean David, age 17, son of Wilfred David (Akwesasne) and Lynn Montour (Kahnawake).

Donovan Thompson, age 17, son of Ivan Thompson (Akwesasne) and Tanya MacMillan, a non-Indian.

Kaienkwirekowa Aaron Presley David, age 20, son of Brenda David (Akwesasne) and Corey Forgues, a non-Indian. He has also applied for a Residency Permit.

Ricky Clause, age 60, is registered with Six Nations, he is applying for a Residency Permit.

Sunny Rae Nelson, age 26, is registered with Kanesatake, she is applying for a Residency Permit.

Laura Rose Thompson, age 26, is applying for a Residency Permit.

Community Members have until Friday, December 5, 2014 to indicate whether they wish to make submissions regarding the above individuals by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics.

At the Akwesasne Membership Board’s meeting of October 8, 2014, the Membership Board granted full Akwesasne Membership to Sarah Sawatis-Cunningham and Kenneth Cree, the Board granted probationary membership and a Residency Permit for one year for Charlotte Green, and approved one year residency permits for Sheyanne Summers and Cameron Taylor. The Membership application of Darius Lafrance was cancelled.

Community members wishing to appeal the Membership Board’s decisions on the above applicants have 30 days to appeal to the Council of Elders by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics. The Office of Vital Statistics is located at the Cornwall Island Administration Building #3, and can be contacted by calling (613) 575-2250 ext. 1011.
