A Voice from the Eastern Door
What a soccer game for the Salmon River girls soccer team last Thursday afternoon! The first half was a little wet and cold due to the weather, but the Lady Shamrocks were hot as they outlasted the Lady Raiders 3-2 in NAC league action.
Massena came out fast to score the first goal eight minutes into the first half when Maris Brockway scored off a pass from Natalie Hurlbut. The Lady Shamrocks didn't let it bother them and worked hard to get on the scoreboard at the 16:15 mark when Nidia DeArmayero found the back of the net off a play from Tsiotenhariio Herne from a corner kick. The Lady Shamrocks struck again with a minute left in the first half when Kelby Mitchell scored assisted by Mallory Johnson.
The second half started out similar to the first when Massena's Alanna Pyke, assisted by Baily Dillabough, scored eight minutes into the game to knot the score. This time it didn't take the Lady Shamrocks long to answer back with the eventual winning goal when Victoria Thompson kicked the ball that sailed through the Raider defense and into the net at the 33:26 mark. Nidia DeArmayero set the play up for the goal. The Salmon River defense worked hard to keep the lead.
Wraven Sunday worked the crease to stop six shots for the win while Mikenna Merry saved six shots for Massena.
"The girls stepped up and played well even in the poor weather conditions. Defense stepped it up after we took the lead," commented Coach Elizabeth Durfee.
SRCS-2/Gouverneur-2
Earlier in the week the Lady Shamrocks hosted the Gouverneur Wildcats and ended the match with a 2-2 tie after double overtime.
The first half ended with a tied score of 1-1. Nidia DeArmayero scored the only SRCS goal of the half when she scored unassisted on a breakaway.
The second half was scoreless.
During the first overtime both teams scored a goal to even the score again at 2-2. Mallory Johnson picked up the goal for the Lady Shamrocks when she converted off a play from Victoria Thompson.
The 2-2 tied score sent the game into a second overtime which ended up scoreless.
Wraven Sunday came up with 19 big saves for SRCS while Taylor Andrews had 13 saves for Gouverneur.
"Both goalies played very well and had some big saves to keep their team in the game," said Coach Elizabeth Durfee.
