A Voice from the Eastern Door
The 2014 Salmon River National Honor Society induction ceremony was held at 6:00 p.m. September 24, in the high school auditorium.
The Ceremony opened with NHS president, Breana Griffin, welcoming family and friends as well as current members and new inductees. Ms. Griffin gave a brief history of the organization and high school principal, Mr. Mike Warden, introduced the current members: Ken'taratiron Arquette, Jenna Clute, Abigail Grant, Breana Griffin, Nicole Hart, John Harvey, Ciera Jock, Zack Jock, Chance Monette, Kiera Pyke, Clair Russell and Connor Walrath.
Current members Ciera Jock, Clair Russell, Jenna Clute, and Connor Walrath gave individual speeches on each of the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Twenty-one inductees in grades 10-12, escorted by a current member, lit a candle representing the lamp/candle of knowledge. They took the NHS Pledge and signed the official ledger, receiving their NHS membership cards and certificates.
President Breana welcomed all the new members which included, seniors: Trenton Tarbell, Morgan Thompson; juniors: Kaylee Adams, Jacob Bero, Jordan Bigness, Brittany Brooks, Diondra Dyer, Alex Figueroa-Rosa, Jenna French, Caroline Russell, Zachary Smith, Lorna Thomas; sophomores: Noreen Bautista, Colin Benedict, Kariwiiostha Dupree, Elizabeth Fleming, Tekaritha George, Allison Harvey, Kamryn Ransom, Taylor Showen, Krista Walrath.
The new inductees were chosen through a highly selective process. Prospective members fill out an application to show their hard work, leadership skills, extracurricular activities, and community service. The application is then given to a committee for evaluation in choosing the best candidates for the organization. Each member must have and maintain a cumulative average of 85 or higher and perform two hours a month of community service. "Membership in the society is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student," stated Ms. Griffin.
This year there has been a few changes in the SR NHS organization. In the past, membership was reserved for juniors and seniors. This year sophomores have been added to the membership. "I get them in ninth grade and don't see the students again until 11th or 12th grade when they are inducted into NHS. This way I can watch them develop and grow," explained NHS adviser, Ron Jeror, who is also the 9th grade global studies teacher. "It also gives students an extra year to participate."
Another change is the time of year that the inductions take place. Inductions use to take place in the spring about two weeks before graduation. This year the ceremony took place at the beginning of the school year. "We would have the newly inducted seniors for two weeks. It wasn't fair that they didn't get to participate in all the activities, especially the community service activities," stated Mr. Jeror.
The evening ended with Ms. Griffin inviting everyone for cake and punch. Congratulations to all the new members!
