AKWESASNE – Ms. Jann C. Day, age 63, of 36 Racquette Point Road, unexpectedly passed away Thursday morning, September 25, 2014 at her home.
Jann was born February 5, 1951 in Syracuse, the daughter of the late Jacob and Grace LaFrance Day. She attended St. Regis Mohawk School before graduating from Salmon River Central School in 1969. She later attended Free-Hardman College in Tennessee before attending and graduating from St. Lawrence University.
Jann worked in different agencies with St. Regis Mohawk Tribe for 23 years until her retirement in 2013. Most recently she was working with the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens, where she truly enjoyed the time she spent with her "seniors." She had previously worked for Bell Telephone in Albany and Plattsburgh. Jann also worked at one time as the Editor/Manager of the Indian Time Newspaper and Akwesasne Notes. Jann was an avid animal lover and her generosity showed through her monthly donations to the SPCA. She loved going to the beach, especially Myrtle Beach; reading, was an excellent cook and truly enjoyed visiting with her many friends on the telephone. Jann was also an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan and enjoyed watching her nephew, Tylar, play hockey.
Jann is survived by her brother, Jeff Day of Akwesasne; her niece, Jackie and Lawrence "Tiio" Thomas of Akwesasne; her "boys", Tylar and Bryson Thomas; her chosen niece and nephews, Jason, Lesley Ann, Ryan, and Rocklan; her aunt, Annie Burns of Akwesasne; many cousins and dear friends including the "Soda Girls".
In addition to her parents, Jann was predeceased by her brother, Theodore LaFrance Casey on April 3, 1954.
As per her request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A Celebration of her Life will be held on Friday, October 10th at the Senior Citizens Building at 5:00pm. Those wishes to honor Jann may consider donating to the SPCA or a local humane society in her memory.
