A Voice from the Eastern Door

COMMUNITY INPUT NEEDED AT JURY DUTY DISCUSSION

The Akwesasne community is invited and encouraged to attend a discussion and dinner this Thursday, September 25, 2014 to discuss jury duty and the lack of First Nations representation on juries.

The Debwewin First Nation Jury Review Implementation Committee will be hosting the meeting being held from 7-9 p.m. at the Kawehno:ke Community Centre on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island).  The committee is travelling to First Nations communities to get a better understanding of why First Nations people choose not to participate in jury duty, while also sharing the message that First Nations representation is important.  A jury is meant to be of a person’s peers, so when a First Nations person is on trial it would be appropriate to have First Nations representation on the jury as well.

Share your thoughts, concerns, and have all of your jury duty questions answered.    The event is free, open to the public, and a light dinner will be served.
