Massena volleyball takes two straight
The Massena Lady Raiders volleyball contingent took two straight victories against Canton and Edwards-Knox.
Krysha Angus and Tianna Back anchored the victory against E-K. Angus fashioned 10 points and two kills. Back notched five points and a pair of kills.
The team went on to claim all three sets 25-13, 25-13 and 25-13.
In the win against Canton, Bailey Thomas paced Massena with eight service points, three kills and two aces. Katelynn Malone tallied six points, two aces and two kills. Madeline Thibault recorded 14 assists. The team claimed all three sets, 25-8, 25-9 and 25-14.
The Massena Red Raiders swim team left the pool on Friday, Sept. 12 with a 72-21 win over the Salmon River Shamrocks.
The Lady Raiders paced all events except one.
Lady Raider Kanahstastsi Smoke took first place in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:22.24.
Salmon River’s win was in the 400-meter freestyle. Katrina Oakes, Clair Russell, Abigail Grant and Caroline Russell finished the race in 5:05.13.
Massena’s Kalie Peets and Natalie Hurlbut each finished the meets with two wins. Peets took the 200-meter individual medley in 2:49.09 and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:20.59. Hurlbut claimed the 200-meter freestyle in 2:26.35 and the 500-meter freestyle in 6:31.34.
Other Massena top finishers included Sydnee Carroll, who took the 50-meter freestyle in 28.5. Sydney Lewis topped off the 100-meter freestyle in 1:04.74. The combined force of Abby Elman, Peets, Carroll and Ashna Gupta fashioned a win in the 200-meter medley relay in 2:16.47. By their powers combined, Peets, Hurlbut, Lewis and Kurstin Stowell won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:02.36.
Massena girls take a win and a loss at home
The Massena girl’s soccer squad took their first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 12 over the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils at their home turf, Mike Nichols Field.
The Lady Raiders built up a 3-0 lead by halftime, then each side scored in the second half for a 4-1final score.
Mia Jermano sparked the Massena offense with an assist from Abby LaClair about 10 minutes in. Baillie Young followed about five minutes later, assisted by Megan Morgan. LaClair later came through with her second marker of the game with the assist going to Paige Brothers.
Blue Devil Lexi Kennedy denied Massena a shutout about three minutes into the second stanza. Massena’s Natalie Hurlbut answered 11 minutes later.
Mikenna Merry turned aside four shots for the Lady Raiders. Allison Garcia kept 10 shots out of the OFA net.
Three days prior, Massena was denied victory by the Potsdam Sandstoners. The final score was 2-1.
Jermano helped put Massena out to an early 1-0 lead. She converted a play set up by Devin Kelly at 9:10, fashioning the Lady Raiders’ only goal of the bout.
About two minutes later, Sandstoner Savarah Aidun tied the match unassisted.
Thirteen minutes into the second stanza, Potsdam’s Kalie Grant took a pass from Hannah Dreschel and turned it into the game-winner.
Massena’s Mikenna Merry and Potsdam’s Bre Sapp each kept five scoring attempts at bay.
Massena boy’s soccer falls to OFA, Potsdam
The Massena Red Raiders soccer team fell in their last two contests to the OFA Blue Devils and the Potsdam Sandstoners.
A precisely aimed cornerkick proved to be Massena’s kryptonite on Thursday, Sept. 11 at Mike Nichols Field in Massena.
Just 43 seconds into the first half, Nate Peo fired a cornerkick right into Massena’s net, the only goal the Blue Devils would need for their 1-0 win.
Netminders Brendan Broderick, Massena and Jake Sias, OFA each left the field with seven saves.
On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Potsdam Sandstoners connected twice in the first half and held onto the lead for a 2-0 win.
Dan Caamano scored 10 minutes in, assisted by Jake Mitchell. About 15 minutes later, Dylan Gruneisen converted a pass from Pat Normandin for the game’s final goal.
Brendan Broderick stopped 11 shots for Massena. Ashler Herrick turned aside one scoring attempt for Potsdam.
