A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Outlawz (13-5) are making a push for the top spot in the Three Nations Senior B Lacrosse League. They are on a three-game winning streak after beating the Snake Island Muskies (14-4) 8-5 on Saturday, July 26 at Anowarakowa Arena.
If Akwesasne keeps winning and Snake Island extends their loss into a streak, the Outlawz could easily finish the 2014 season at number one in the league.
Saturday's contest was neck-and-neck through the first 40 minutes, each team tossing three goals on the opening stanza and two goals in the second. The Outlawz stepped up their defensive efforts in the closing frame, shutting out Muskie attackers while connecting on three goals.
Akwesasne's Jarrett Jacobs got the ball rolling just over a minute into the game, converting a pass from Taylor Barnhart. The Muskies' answer came from Shane Francis after taking a pass from Casey Swamp 5:52 later. Francis duplicated the effort about four minutes later, this time Andrew Lazore tallied the assist. Derek Hopps brought the Outlawz back into the game 1:13 later. He was assisted by Brandon Swamp and Angus Leborgne. Their squadmate Josh Jacobs gave the team a one-goal advantage 2:20 later, with assists credited to Leborgne and Tekari Thompson. But Snake Island's Callum Crawford wasn't going to let the buzzer ring without a fight. He fired off a tying goal with just over a minute on the clock on a play set up by Casey Swamp and Trey Adams.
The middle stanza saw the two teams trade goals. Andrew Lazore continued the Muskie rally 5:11 in, assisted by Crawford. Then the Outlawz Tyler Barnhart broke through, with helpers from Josh Jacobs and Brandon Swamp. Casey Swamp posted the final Snake Island goal of the game with just under 10 minutes in the frame after taking a pass from Hank Delisle and Jordan Thomas, giving the squad a 5-4 lead. But Cory Thompson made it a tie affair 49 seconds later, assisted by Hakta Garrow.
Akwesasne sealed their victory in the closing period. They fashioned three goals in the last 6:20 of the game, coming off the sticks of Tekari Thompson (assisted by Josh Jacobs), Brandon Swamp (assisted by Angus Leborgne and Matt Thompson) and Angus Leborgne (unassisted). Ni McComber covered the goal for Akwesasne and was credited a win to his tally. Trey Adams was Snake Island's goaltender and added a loss to his record.
The previous day at Deseronto Recreation Centre, the Muskies took a 17-4 win over the Tyendinaga Wolfpack. They outscored 5-1 in the first period, 7-2 in the second and 5-1 in the third.
Hank Delisle (four goals, three assists) and Russ Cree (one goal, seven assists) paced the Muskies. Chad Thompson scored four goals, Shane Francis recorded two goals and two assists, and Lee Thomas tallied a goal and three helpers. Mac Mitchell connected for three goals and Korin Sunday contributed a pair of goals and an assist. Trent Jacobs fashioned three assists, Clayton Barnes two and one each came from Jake Lazore and Trey Adams. Adams worked the crease for the win.
For the Wolfpack, one goal each came from Isaac Maracle (one assist), Victor Green, Chuck Gamble and Korey James. Greg Reilly assisted on two plays. Quinn Lazore and Jamie Brant recorded one helper each. Andrew Maracle and Sawyer Brinklow split the time in net and each added a loss to their record.
