A Voice from the Eastern Door
AKWESASNE – Mrs. Monica Cook, age 102, a native of Akwesasne, currently residing in Grayson, Georgia, passed away Friday morning, July 25, 2014 at the home of her daughter, where she had been residing for the past several years.
Monica was born October 16, 1911, on Sugar Bush Island, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Martin Jacques. She attended elementary school in Hogansburg and graduated from Fort Covington High School. She later graduated from Our Lady of Victory Nursing School in Buffalo. On September 23, 1939, she married Henry J. Cook at the St. Regis Catholic Church. Henry predeceased her on December 1, 1976.
Monica was a private duty nurse for many years retiring in 1986 at the age of 75. She was a communicant of St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church in Snellville, Georgia and a member of the American Legion Post #1479 Auxiliary. Monica loved to travel, listen to music, enjoyed dancing, and reading. She truly enjoyed traveling back to Akwesasne every chance she got, especially spending summers with her nephew, Daniel and Loveday McDonald. Perhaps her greatest enjoyments were the time she spent with her granddaughters and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Monica "Pogo" and Denny Grant of Grayson, Georgia; her granddaughters, Monica and Richie Malone of Covington, Georgia; Denise and Michael Ambrose of Ventura, California; and Michelle and Steve Sonn of Boca Raton, Florida; her great grandchildren, Skylar and Jacob Sonn and Tucker and Stella Ambrose; by sisters-in-law Elda Cook and Leona Cook; and by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Monica was predeceased by her sisters, Nancy Ransom, Margaret Cook, Anna Sharpe, Louise Arquette, Agnes Jacques, Mary Ann McDonald, Elizabeth Lazore, and Cecelia Laughing.
