A Voice from the Eastern Door
TERRITORY OF AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is notifying the community that effective immediately the Healthy Homes Initiative (HHI), a program within the Department of Housing, will no longer be operational due to lack of funding.
The HHI was created in 2011 by MCA using Rama and other dollars to address housing issues in the community in regard to health and safety. The program combined an educational component with actual housing repairs in order to bring homes up to health and safety code while teaching the homeowner how to maintain the house and prevent issues from reoccurring.
Throughout the 3-year initiative, close to 300 homes in MCA’s jurisdiction were inspected and the needs for repairs identified. HHI completed repairs for several homes, and education has been ongoing. However, due to the program’s indefinite discontinuation, HHI will not be able to complete the repairs of the remaining homes at this time. Homeowners will be contacted in the future if funding allows for the program to be reinstated.
The Department of Housing has a number of loan programs available to assist community members with home repair and maintenance projects. For more information, please don’t hesitate to contact the Department of Housing at 613-575- 2250.
