A Voice from the Eastern Door

Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club Recognition Award Ceremony

On June 19, 2014 the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club held their Mentor Appreciation night. The ABGC have three different mentoring programs at the club; The "Be Great Graduate Mentoring", which is a Boys & Girls Clubs of America program targeting Boys and Girls Club staff. Most of the staff at ABGC are mentors in this program that has 50 mentees enrolled in grades 6-10. Secondly; the National Congress of American Indians mentoring program has 25 mentees and this program has volunteering mentors which meet on their free time for an hour a week with their mentees. The third mentoring program is the Office of Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention mentoring program, which also has 25 members enrolled.

All together there are 100 of our ABG Club members signed up for one of the three programs. The ABGC have five staff that cover the "Be Great Graduate" mentoring program and five non-staff, outside mentors. The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club wanted to give back to the mentors by recognizing them with a mentor appreciation night for doing such a great job and making a positive difference in the lives of ABGC members. The mentors were honored with Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club water bottles filled with "Thank You" notes from their mentees as well as a plaque thanking them for mentoring our future leaders. The mentors honored were Brandon David who carries 13 mentees, Erin Seymour, Daniel Lazore, Evan Thompson and Kobi Johnson, all for the help that they provide our members. Mentors are matched with Club members by shared interests. Depending on the program, most mentors meet with their mentee once a week. If you are interested in becoming a mentor and volunteering your time to a ABG club member who is eager to learn and listen to what you have to share, you can call the Akwesasne Boys and Girls and Club at 518 358 9911.
