A Voice from the Eastern Door

The summer heat is upon us. It is important to understand how important it is too keep your dogs cool in extreme temperatures. Did you know that dogs cannot sweat? Well, they sweat a very small amount through the pads on their feet but the main way they keep cool is by panting. In extreme heat panting isn't always enough to avoid heat stroke. It can happen quickly. This is why it is important to keep fresh cool water available for your dog at all times, especially outdoor dogs. You should keep the water in a shady area as well and keep it fresh by changing it frequently. Your dog might enjoy a bit of sunbathing, but be careful because dogs can get sunburned just like we can. There is doggy sunscreen available but using it isn't ideal. It is best to provide adequate shelter with shade. An insulated dog house is best; make sure it is large and well ventilated. If your dog loves water, consider giving him a molded plastic kiddie pool filled with water. It could be a great place for your dog to play and cool off. You can even put some ice into the pool; the dog will enjoy the coolness and even chew on the ice cubes as a treat! You should supervise your dog while in the pool. You might think supervising the dog in the pool is silly, but you don't want him to chew the pool! You should also change the water frequently to prevent mosquito larvae from forming, since standing water attracts mosquitoes. The last tip is the most very important one; do not leave your dog in the car while you go into the store shopping. Many people think by cracking a window it is okay. IT IS NOT SAFE. Even on a moderately warm day the car can heat up to dangerously high temperatures in minutes. So, it is best to leave the dog home in the air conditioning and with his chew toys!
