CONSPIRACY TO
DISTRIBUTE MARIJUANA
By Andy Gardner
On Friday, June 20, a Canadian man admitted in federal court that he conspired with others to smuggle marijuana from the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation to Brooklyn.
Derrick Martin, age and address not available, also known as Darrick Martin, pleaded to conspiracy to distribute marijuana. He could receive a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
Martin, who worked as a marijuana runner, was charged stemming from a 2007 incident.
On June 17 of that year, Martin made a run from Akwesasne to Brooklyn to Washington D.C. where, he admitted in court, he delivered between 88 and 132 pounds of pot.
He was paid $500 for gas, food and lodging before making the transport. He picked up a car on the reservation that had a push-to-talk cell phone in it, which he used to get directions. He went from a hotel to Brooklyn to deliver the cannabis and received $40,000 payment.
He then wired $5,000 of that to another person and drove to Washington, D.C. to pick up a parcel, which he was to return to Akwesasne. When he returned, he was stopped by police, who, using a drug detection dog, found $178,000 in the car.
A sentencing date has not been set.
